Magenta and the Magic Cloth

An inspiring group of young women in a fashion club at Hollow Hills High School East in New York, called Magenta and the Magic Cloth, made denim bags and engaged in other fundraising activities as part of Pumped Up for Peace. In the photo, students from the club are presenting a check to Mr. Marco Balazero, Minister Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Peru to the United Nations to help the community in Huacaria.

What ideas can you come up with to help raise money in your community?

Magenta and the Magic Cloth
Our Mission

The world is like a cloth and we are the millions of individual threads that maintain the structure of this cloth. When issues such as poverty, pollution, water-shortages, minimal health care and scarce education threaten to tear the cloth, we must be strong enough to mend the frayed fibers of humanity.

The goal of Magenta and the Magic Cloth is to reach out globally and touch the lives of others. As a program determined to support the United Nations efforts in implementation of sustainable development commitments, our focus is based on the International Year of Freshwater. In order to achieve our goal we are currently raising awareness of the living conditions in Peru. In the process, we will make connections that will last a lifetime as we promote health and education in this community.

The Fashion Club decided to not only raise money through a fashion show for water-related issues in Peru, but also to give gifts of jean bags to the girls filled with toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, pens and notebooks, making connections with people of all nations and races.

The Magic Cloth represents the bags, which have been made, but can be anything that requires time, effort and love to create. We took old jeans and recycled them to make the bags. Our actions embody the program’s concept of young people’s leadership by giving teens the power to unite the different cultures of the world. Culture has blossomed with such diversity ranging from the simple creativity of fashion and music, to the way in which we interact harmoniously. Developing and understanding of these differences and accepting them are the foundation upon which we can build a peaceful world.

As Magenta and the Magic Cloth develops, it will continue to promote the goals of the International Year of Freshwater in U.S. schools and communities worldwide. Although the Fashion Club at Half Hollow Hills High School East founded this program, it will continue wherever a warm and eager heart is found.
