Peace, Love and Unity
Poem by Ayak Chol
(Read during the Student Commemoration by Harum Mukhayer at the UN Mission to Sudan)
A day will come when war will be no more
When discrimination will be long gone.
A day of peace love and unity.
A day will come
when mothers shall embrace their long dead sons
and fathers shake hands with the family
they have longed to see.
a day of peace love and unity.
A day will come,
when wrinked with age grandparents
shall sit by the hearth
and remember their long forgotten tragedy
as tears stream down those old burned cheeks,
the young shall listen with emotion
and turn their backs to the past.
A day will come,
when the eyes that have seen no gladness
blink with emotion
and those lips part to make a smile
A day will come,
when i shall see my beloved sudan
united in brotherly love
and then there shall be democracy
by it's real meaning,
a day of great peace love and unity.
A day will come,
when the handling of weapons will be long forgotten
and the sight of blood never seen.
A day will come when hearts will be pure white
as freshly picked cotton
A day of great peace love and unity; for all.

Response from A Student Participant at the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS):
Attending a conference at the UN was my dream and I’m very happy it has come true! Participating in this conference was very beneficial for me; it gave me the chance of meeting new people. Being from Northern Sudan, I also had the chance of meeting people from the South, and people from Darfur. It was interesting to hear their opinions about peace and human rights in Sudan. I also became more aware of the current peace situation in my own country; I had broad ideas but now they are more detailed. I am now more concerned about what is happening in Darfur and I would do my best to help try to stop it.
Having graduated this year from high school my main aim is to major in development studies; hence this conference was very interesting for me. I also got to know about conflicts in other countries around the world such as Liberia and Afghanistan, and had the chance of hearing what people my age (who are usually ignored by the media) think of peace and human rights in their countries. I would like to thank all of you who have made it possible for me to participate, especially Jordan.
