DPKO: The Department of Peacekeeping Operations
Has up-to-date information on UN peacekeeping missions, mine action, and more.
FAO: The Food and Agricultural Organization
Helps least-developed nations grow food and develop crops for future use, and responds to emergencies like droughts and famines.
UNODCP: UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention
Covers activism, conferences and summits, documentation, Human Rights, International Affairs, drugs/crime, and women's issues.
The International Court of Justice
Based at the Hague, Netherlands. The principal judicial organ of the United Nations, which deals with international law, war criminals, etc. Mirror sites.
World Bank
Mostly economic program information.
UNICEF: United Nations Childrens Fund
Convention on the Rights of the Child, children's issues: health, safety, refugees, food security, education. Look for the Child Labor Cartoons.
WHO: World Health Organization
World health, diseases, vaccinations, what the UN is doing to help those desperately in need of basic health care.
UNESCO: UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
Dedicated to preserving world cultural treasures, promoting cross- cultural exchange, and global scientific sharing. Based in Paris, with a terrific section called WebWorld (click from homepage).
UNEP:The UN Environment Programme
Based in Nairobi, UNEP helps the world figure out how to protect land and water from spoilage. Small island issues, forestry, oceans.
ILO: The International Labor Organization
Helps to ensure free, fair, and dignified working conditions for those sometimes unable to make themselves heard. Also, child labor.
WTO: The World Trade Organization
The only global international organization dealing with
the rules of trade between nations, WTO's goal is to
help producers of goods and services, exporters, and
importers conduct their business.
UNHCR: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Founded in 1951, UNHCR helps refugees by offering
legal and humanitarian aid in temporary settlements,
aid in returning home or settling in a new country, and
educational, medical, and community services.
OHCHR: Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
The mission of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights,
based in Geneva, is to protect and promote all human rights for all.
The office helps ensure the protection of people and the prevention of
abuses. It enforces and implements international human rights treaties.
UNFPA: United Nations Population Fund
Founded in 1969, UNFPA helps developing countries find
solutions to their population problems. The Fund has three main
programme areas: Reproductive Health including Family Planning
and Sexual Health, Population and Development Strategies, and Advocacy.
WFP: World Food Programme
Set up in 1963, WFP is the UN's frontline agency in the battle against
world hunger. In 2001, WFP fed 77 million people in 82 countries,
including most of the world's refugees and internally displaced people.
WFP has good country briefs on hunger.
Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)
Promotes broad-based and sustainable development. Based primarily on the programmes and platforms of action adopted by the United Nations Conferences and Summits of late. Statistics and analysis of issues relating to development and women, globalization, Africa, population, etc.
UNRWA: United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East
Sine 1950, UNRWA has been committed to the welfare and development of one group of refugees.
Today, UNRWA is the main provider of basic services - education, health, relief and social services - to over 3.9 million
registered Palestine refugees in the Middle East.
