- understand that urbanization is an ongoing process
- gain a historical and global perspective on the evolution of
cities
- identify the three distinct phases of urban expansion
- identify and explain the conditions that led to the development
of cities at different points in history
- understand that the largest cities of the world have always been
significant cities
- understand that urbanization is a global phenomenon and is not
an issue in one part of the world
