Day Events 2004
Here are some of the events that will be occuring across
the United States on Earth Day:
NEW YORK
Representatives from the Executive Office of Secretary-General,
specialized UN agencies, Member States, intergovernmental
organizations, the press, and non-governmental organizations
will be present to participate in the Japanese Peace Bell
ceremony at UN Headquarters at 1:49 am on 20 March, 2004.
First Love, a high-energy group of five young singers from
Uganda, Africa, will perform during the Earth Day ceremony
on 20 March at UN Headquarters. According to musical group's
coordinator, John N. Miller, they wiil be "bringing hope
from Africa through music... [T]he group will sing uplifting
African melodies in both English and Swahili.".
SAN FRANCISCO
Artists Embassy International,
which promotes peace through the arts, will be ringing peace
bells on Friday, 19 March, when the equinox occurs on the
West Coast, as well as on 20 March.
KENTUCKY
The World Peace Bell, the largest swinging bell in the world,
will ring simultaneously at the World Peace Bell Center in
Newport, Kentucky. “The bell weighs 66,000 pounds [and]
was cast in Nantes, France,” according to Brian Plunkett
of the World Peace
Bell Center.
